Dragonflight (5 stars)

The first book of the original Pern series.

There is only one dragon Weyr on Pern and Lessa, the heir to Ruatha Hold is disguised as a scullery maid to avoid the people who invaded her lands and murdered her parents. Bendon Weyr dragon riders, on “search” snatch her up and take her as a possible dragon rider.

Lessa must now choose between taking her hold back or becoming one of the most important dragon riders in the Weyr.

The book is a tour-de-force (did I really say that?) that transported me from my mundane life as an artificial person to another world filled with wonder and danger and I loved every minute of it. Lessa is a strong character who starts out being pushed around by people and forces, and ends up as a take-charge woman who may have the answer to saving her world from the ravages of “thread”, an organism that jumps from another planet with an eccentric orbit when the two are close enough together.

I read the Pern series when I was growing up. She always had wonderful strong females characters. At a time when all most all adventure books of any kind were all by and or about males, Ann McCaffrey and all her books hold a special place in my heart. Thank you for your wonderful review, reminding me of books I need to reread as an adult.

I read most of the Pern series three years ago when I was stuck in a wheelchair for a while. I love the dragons – big and small – and I like the idea of a new and unconquered land way out in space. Enjoyed the reads.

I read most of the original Pern series and enjoyed all of them. But I just finished a volume of short stories (Chronicles of Pern – First Fall) that wasn’t bad, but didn’t live up to the earlier works.

Oddly enough, none of the stories were about the “first fall” the colonists experienced; the story is DURING the first fall, but the colonists were in the middle of the pass and knew how to deal with it after a fashion and full-sized dragons were already tamed and being used. One did explained where the organism actually came from.
